END-OF-ESP COURSE SELF-ASSESSMENT

Writing (a summary): After ESP course I am able to write a summary quite well. I know the rules, what it is one of the most important thing in order to write a good summary. The most confusing it is a grammar and spelling. But I think my writing skills became better.

Writing ESP vocabulary tests: My tests evaluations now there are better than in the beginning of the course. I think that I learned to separate the most important information and so it is easier to reach good results.

Writing class dictations: At first these tasks were the most comptlicated for me. Because I can't concentrate on listening and writing at the same time. But after some exercises I noticed that I performe much better than at the beginning. I realised that exercising helped me a lot. Now I am able to write all the sentences which are dictated.

Listening comprehension in class: Listening tasks results depends on many factors: the accent of the person who is talking, my concentration on the task, the type of a listening task. The easiest task it is ''true or false'', but sometimes another type tasks also are not very hard.

Listening to peers' power point presentations: Everything depends on the presentation theme and the accent of the presentor. If the presentation looks interesting and presentor speaks clearly than it is easy to listen and understand. But if the presentor it is using many complicated or unknown words it is hard to listen and give the opinion after the presentation.

Making power point presentations: I think that my last presentation was the best of all which I have done before. I am making some pronunciation mistakes but my talking skills now there are better than at the beginning of the course.

Speaking on ESP themes in class: I think that my vocabulary is expanded, but nevertheless sometimes while speaking I forget the words and I can't express my opinion as I wish.

To sum up, I think that my writing, listening and speaking skills became much better. I think this course helps me in the future while learning Psychology.

Kleptomania

  • Kleptomania - is a disorder characterized by disability to resist the urge to steal. It is still unknown what causes this disorder, although there are some views about genetical influence. Studies shows that about 60% of population could have this disorder and it is more common in females.

It is difficult to diagnose kleptomania if patients don't seek medical help for this disorder. Usually this disorder is diagnosed when patients seek help for another reason, such as depression, panic attack, eating disorder (bulimia, anorexia), for feeling emotionally unstable. The highest correlation it is between kleptomania and bulimia. This means that bulimic people usually are also kleptomaniac. People with this disorders steal in order to get a thrill. Sometimes these stealing acts could be restricted to special objects, but usually people can't explain the motives of their actions.

The main symptoms of kleptomania (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2007):
  • Powerful urges to steal things that you don't need;
  • Feeling increased tension leading up to the theft;
  • Feeling pleasure or gratification while stealing;
  • Feeling terrible guilt or shame after the theft.

Differently from typical shoplifters, kleptomaniacs steal not for their personal needs or personal gain. They just steal because of the unacountable urge. People with kleptomania steal spontaneously, without thinking or planning. They steal from friends, supermarkets or other public places, usually worthless things which they don't need.
Kleptomania could be treated by using psychotherapies such as cognitive-behavioral and rational emotive therapy, but a treatment takes a lot of efforts.
To sum up, kleptomania is a very difficult disorder which can caused low self- esteem, permanent feelings of guilt, shame and powerless to change something. Also it can damage the relationships with other people, because they won‘t trust you anymore. But we should believe that new medical and psychological knowledge help us to treat this disoreder.

Self - assessment of ESP leraning

Writing skills:
In the ESP course I find out new instructions about how to write summaries . I knew that there are so many kinds of summaries, like restatement, analytical or critical. Now I think that I am able to write a summary much more correctly, and this activity now looks easier for me.
ESP vocabulary tests also now looks a little bit easier, because my vocabulary is expanded and I can remember more information.
Dictations for me it is a quite hard task. Sometimes I can't remember what it is dictating and so I can't do a task very well. Also I did many mistakes of speling and punctuation. But I think that my skills are becoming better after every dictation task.
Self- desined tests it is a new and very interesting task. It helps me to summaries important information, and to remember it better. But of course this task isn't very easy, because if I want to prepare a good test I should be very accurate. And I think that not every test which I prepered it is very good.
Contributions to weblog for me it is interesting but hard task. Because sometimes I have lack of ideas. And also when I'm writting I did many spelling and grammar mistakes.
Speaking skills:
As I mentioned before, after ESP course my vocabulary it is expanded, and now I am able to talk much better. However sometimes I forget some words and can't express my opinion very accurate. Speaking in pairs it is easier than speaking in class discussions for me, because speaking with one person isn't so thrilling.
For me it is very hard to prepare and to represent a presentation that everyone could understand it. Sometimes while speaking I am doing many mistakes and I could be misunderstood.
Listening skills:
Listening sometimes looks a difficult and sometimes easy task. It depends on my concentration, the accent of speaker, and the theme of the text. But now listening tasks there are easier to do, than at the begining of ESP course.
Reding skills:
Home reading for me it is easier than class reading, because at home I can use a dictionary and so I understand the material better. Also when I am reading in class, sometimes I don't read the material very carefully, because I haven't enough time.
Computer tasks aren't very hard, because for me it is easy to find the information on the internet.

I think that after few month of ESP course my skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening in English become much better.

Artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence could be defined as the intelligence of machines.
In our daily lives computers and other new technologies are becoming more and more important. Computers help us to do many activities easier, so it is natural that we become dependent on them.
I am amazed of all the new technologies, especially the robots. They can do anything what people want and order them to do. All the programs are prepared so good, that they can behave like humans. For example, robots can serve drinks or food. Also they are very important for many researches, especially in the space. It is much more easier to send the robots in the space rather than people.
Of course it is very interesting or even funny to see how robots are behaving like humans, but I think that they will never exchange humans. Because robots don't have the features which are unique for humans -feelings and creativity.
As long as humans understand the importance of feelings, all the machines would be just the machines.

Body language

Body language is a communication by using body movements or gestures instead of verbal language. Many people are using body language all the time but don't notice that, because the gestures usually are unconscious. There are thousands signals of body language which express various emotions and I wanna talk about a few main signals.

One of the most basic body-language signals is when a person
crosses his arms across the chest. This could mean that a person
is putting up an unconscious barrier between themselves and
others. But this can also indicate that the person's arms are cold,
which would be clarified by rubbing or huddling the arms.

Tapping toes, swinging feet or drumming fingers can mean that person are bored of something. Also person could show his boredness by the signals of tiredness like yawning. His whole body may sag as he slouch down in his seat.

Anger people usually are baring of teeth and snarling.

Sad people we can noticed by trembling lip or tears.

Raised eyebrows, widening of eyes and opened mouth shows that a person is surprised.

It is very simple to recognise happy person by his beautiful and shining smile.

Body language it is very important because it could say much more about people than words.

Restatement summary ''Babies show social intelligence''

It is known what babies at the age of six months have learned to sit up, talk or walk, but also it is believed that babies can assess someone's intentions toward them.

Killey Hamlin and colleagues at the Yale university done the experiment with 12 six-month-old and 16 ten-month-old babies, in order to find if babies have social intelligence. The experiment was done with using toys by giving them different characters. It was noticed that babies recognise the positive behaviour. It is believed taht the reasons of this could be that the experiment was done when babies were sitting with their parents.

Scientists believe that this experiment proved that babies are able to show their social intelligence.

The person who influenced me...

I was allways complaining about my life, my friends, what I have too little money, how I looks. I thought that my life is the worst in whole world. But one day I heard a terrible news about my best friend Jolita. She was ill and her illness probably untreatable. She said to me, might be that she is living her last days. At first I was just shocked and couldn't think clearly. But after some time when I saw how she is enjoying her life I feel better, and started to believe. she allways was the optimist, and said me that everything would be all right. And she was right. It's a miracle that now she is healthy.

Jolita teached me to be the optimist like her and enjoy of every second of my life. After this event I become much more stronger. Now I know that my life is the best it could be, my friends are amazing and I am absolutely different.

I am proud of my friend Jolita. She helped my to grow up, to become a personality.
